Massive wind-driven multi-alarm warehouse fire in Belleville, New Jersey that escalated into a block-wide incident and one of the largest fires in the area in recent time. The fire broke out Sunday afternoon around 2:45 PM at a commercial mattress warehouse on Cortlandt Street. First arriving units encountered heavy fire conditions throughout the structure with fire already pushing through the roof. Within minutes, the incident was upgraded to multiple alarms as crews transitioned to defensive operations due to the volume of fire and collapse risk. As the fire intensified, multiple evacuations were ordered after command reported structural instability, including visible cracking and eventual collapse of portions of the building. Fire quickly extended through the row of attached commercial structures, ultimately involving multiple buildings across an entire city block. Strong wind conditions played a major role in fire spread. Embers were carried well beyond the main fire building, igniting multiple spot fires in surrounding areas, including a separate structure fire approximately two blocks away that escalated into its own response. Due to the size and rapid spread of the fire, water supply became a major operational challenge. Crews were forced to establish long-distance water relays from several blocks away while also drafting from the Passaic River. Portable master streams and ladder pipes were deployed from multiple angles, with some lines stretched through yards and adjacent streets due to limited access and heavy apparatus congestion. At its peak, the fire escalated to a 10th alarm, bringing in extensive mutual aid from across Northern New Jersey including Newark, Jersey City, and multiple county task forces from Hudson, Passaic, Bergen, Union, and beyond. Over 40+ departments operated on scene throughout the incident. Reports indicated the fire involved at least four primary structures in the original row, with additional exposure buildings impacted by radiant heat, including siding melting on nearby structures. Multiple active fires were reported simultaneously at different points in the area due to ember spread. Drone operations were deployed to assist command with situational awareness, while communications were expanded across multiple channels due to the scale of the response. Fuel operations and extended logistical support were established as crews operated for hours into the night. Thermal imaging included in this video highlights the intensity of the fire conditions and demonstrates how heat and fire spread developed throughout the incident. A state of emergency was declared in the area, with evacuations, road closures, and power disruptions affecting nearby residents and businesses. Despite the scale of the fire, no confirmed fatalities have been reported as of this time. This video captures raw fireground conditions as crews worked one of the most significant fires in North Jersey in recent memory. Support the channel here - jerseyshorefireresponse.com
